Google Business listing: what exactly drives calls

A local business gets leads from maps before the website. A checklist of what to fill in and how it affects calls.

Google Business listing: what exactly drives calls
01

Core: category, services, hours

Your primary category determines which searches you’ll show up for at all. Secondary categories add reach, but don’t replace the primary one — pick it based on your main revenue source.

Services with descriptions and honest hours, including holidays, cut half the “are you open?” calls and build trust.

02

Photos matter more than text

Listings with ten or more real photos get noticeably more clicks than listings with a single stock image. Shoot the space, the team, the process, and the result.

Update once a month: fresh photos are a signal to both people and algorithms that the business is active.

03

Reviews: you need to reply to all of them

A reply to a review is a public conversation with a future customer, not with the author of the review. This is especially true for negative ones: a calm, specific reply removes more doubts than ten five-star ratings.

It makes sense to ask for a review right after the deal is closed, with a short message and a link. Without this step, the listing grows slowly.

Key takeaways
1

The primary category matters more than all other fields.

2

Ten real photos work better than any copy.

3

You need to reply to every review, including bad ones.
