Classifying Websites by the Level of Problems They Solve

Brief

By task scope, websites are brochures and homepages, corporate websites and online stores, niche portals, and large services supported by dozens of specialists.

  • The scope of tasks drives both development cost and support cost.
  • A business card site solves presence; a portal solves service for your audience.
  • Choosing the wrong level is costlier than a design mistake: it defines the project architecture.

By their size and the level of tasks they solve, websites differ from each other quite a lot. There are websites that consist of just one page, and there are also those that are supported by dozens of separate high-performance services. Such sites are administered by several dozen people.

Here is an example of a classification of such sites.

  1. To start, let’s single out business card sites and home pages, since there isn’t much information on the pages of these sites, and it isn’t always interesting. Sites of this type are not very appealing and are not very popular with internet users. However, there is no need for that, because their task is only to indicate the presence of something or someone on the internet.
  2. Sites with a specific narrow-focus topic. Sites of this type can grow quite large and have many nested pages. The size of such sites in most cases depends on their popularity: if people are interested in the site, why not expand it. Its popularity directly depends on the information posted on it and, of course, how up to date it is. The topics of such sites are very diverse, and their audience is quite broad and varied. Still, these are narrow-focus sites that can bring together only groups of people. For example, people of the same nationality or people with the same profession.
  3. Multi-functional websites. A special niche in the online space is occupied by portal sites. Among all the variety of sites, they are flagship ships with a huge number of visitors. The creation and support of such resources is handled by some of the best minds in IT. Such sites connect entire continents. It’s unlikely that any RuNet user hasn’t heard of such giants as Google, Yandex, TUT.BY. With their help, internet users can easily find out the latest news, tomorrow’s weather forecast, read a horoscope, ask a question and get an answer to it, set up their personal email, chat with friends, and so on.
