Choosing a domain name

Choosing a domain name

Contents

  1. 1. The domain should have a short name
  2. 2. The domain should be easy to remember
  3. 3. A good domain name should be unique, i.e., it should be hard to confuse it with a similar-sounding domain
  4. 4. A good domain name should be hard to misspell, or the likelihood of that should be minimized.
  5. 5. A good domain name should describe your line of business.

Brief

A good domain name is short, easy to remember, not confused with similar-sounding ones, doesn’t trigger spelling mistakes, and, if possible, reflects the company’s line of business.

  • A short domain is easier to say over the phone and use in ads.
  • If the name is taken, a functional or emotional name is better than a long descriptive one.
  • Test how it sounds out loud too: a domain is often shared by voice, not by link.

There are several signs of a good domain name:

1. The domain should have a short name

Choosing a nice, short domain name is becoming more and more difficult, since most of those names are already taken.
But there is still a chance that luck will smile on you and you will find a short domain name.
The brevity of a domain name is important for several reasons:
First, a short domain name will look good on a logo
Second, such a name is easier to remember, and the likelihood that customers will write it down incorrectly is minimized

In short, you should strive to register the shortest domain name possible, unless you want the domain name to match your company name.

2. The domain should be easy to remember

A short name is an obvious plus, but it also has to be easy to remember.
Let’s take unusual names such as Amazon.com, Google.com, and FogDog.com as an example.
Such word combinations not only sound interesting, but are also very effective in terms of memorability.
Repeated consonants as in Google, or a rhyming domain like FogDog, or good combinations like WilsonWeb make a domain name easy to remember.
Say your future domain name out loud several times, listen to how it sounds, and whether you like that sound.

3. A good domain name should be unique, i.e., so that it is hard to confuse it with a similar-sounding domain

If, for example, the owner of a domain that sounds similar to yours is the first to register their trademark, your domain name will be at risk, or your ability to use it when developing your brand will be very limited. Therefore, don’t forget to register a trademark to eliminate in the future the possibility of sites with similar names appearing.

4. In a good domain name, it should be difficult to make spelling mistakes, or the likelihood should be minimized.

If there is still a chance of misspelling your domain name, then it will most likely happen.
The longer and more complex the domain name, the harder it usually is for your customers to type it without mistakes.

5. A good domain name should reflect your line of business.

The ideal option is when your domain name can be easily identified from your company name. But don’t give up if you can’t find a domain that will describe exactly what you do. Choose a functional name, or a name that reveals your uniqueness and conveys a certain emotional attitude.
